Travel Through Time...as We Color This House!

Before - Historic Massachusetts home

Looking for a change from this red house…these clients wanted to see some new ideas before they bought any paint at all!  So they contacted us and we worked with them using our unique Designer Color Palettes™ visualization service!

Historic home with New color concept via DCP

With our Designer Color Palettes™ service, we offer many ways to view various color schemes before buying any paint at all!

Take a close look at the body color, the darker window trims, and the more subtle accent colors that highlight the architectural detail of this historic New England home.

This is the same virtual design service we’ve offered to clients for many years,  on our sister site, Barbara Jacobs Color and Design.

Before changes: California contemporary home in the hills

This unique home offered a setting to inspire many color scheme ideas. It has some great points but the current colors are not making the most of the features of this home.

Starting with this… the areas to consider are:

  • Body – different areas
  • Trim – different areas
  • Windows – can change trim
  • Garage – considering replacing the door vs painting the existing door
  • Gutters: to be replaced, new color will be selected from manufacturer options offered.

Here's a closeup detail views, original colors.

Siding and trim detail

Before new colors: side view

Side view: interesting possibilites can develop with the various surface areas of body and trim.

Concept 1: California contemporary home

This is one of many color design concepts. Note that with our Designer Color Palettes™ service we can show many creative options in a very realistic way. No paint needed… yet!

This version is a more subtle, elegant use of neutral colors than the original. Notice how we brought the trim colors into the entry way for a more consistent overall look.

More contrast, more dramatic

Still an elegant color concept, this more colorful version has visual impact even from a distance.

Whether with warmer colors, cool colors, or a combination – we can make it all work out in uniqely personal and effective ways!

More variations and a new garage door idea

Lighter body and window trim overall. Accent trim on stair railing up and around entry focus; stair risers and treads; narrow trim around new garage door featuring glass panels and dark trim, as on the upstairs windows.

Warmer options...

Warmer variations…Front view of the house with an applied view of a darker warm color.

Detail note: most of the flat trim is light, and that color is used in the main entry also. However, the accent trim color outlines the entry area at the top of the stairway.

Warmer options - side view

Side view of the house with an applied view of a darker warm color.

Cool colors and more...

The clients were interested in changing their garage door and here’s a great choice shown as if combined in a color palette that tastefully inclues warm, cool, and neutral colors.

Tonal cooler palette with warm accents.

More with the beautiful cooler, earthy gray-green. Makes use of the existing black window frames to outline the windows throughout.

An IACC Accredited Color Designer since 2000

Barbara received accreditation status in 2000 through the IACC (International Association of Color Consultants). Her work has been published internationally through that organization. She has been acknowledged as an expert in the field of applied color psychology and supportive color design.

Barbara has also been interviewed by, and published with, numerous national professional and shelter media, both in print and online. These articles have been focused on the subject of supportive color design, color trends, and selecting colors for architecture and interiors of all types.

Bringing Artistry to the Built Environment and Supportive Color Design

Known as an innovator in the field of color design for the built environment, Barbara has a noteworthy design background. In addition to her personal artwork, since 1986 she has helped to create supportive environments for her clients in their homes and workplaces.

She continues her ongoing practice as an architectural color consultant for interior and exterior color choices in residential and commercial locations of all sizes. Projects include online color consulting for “long distance” as well as “on-site” consultations, both local and traveling to further locations.

Design Trends: Love'em or Leave'em

Because I’m often asked about design trends…the “latest colors,” “what’s next,” and what I think about it all…I can say that the idea and concept of “trends” is here to stay—but the actual “Trends” are, well, transitory.

There are many reasons for this, and as a former member of the notable Color Marketing Group, I did learn a lot about that fascinating aspect of design, and color design in particular. So, personally, while I enjoy seeing what is the latest thing, it is really about selling products, so in some ways, as a fad they will change often.

Our lives move so fast, so one question we can ask ourselves when considering color choices for our homes is about how often we want to be making changes to keep up with the latest thing!

How important is it? The answer is different—and equally valid—for each individual.

HOA Community

Our HOA needed to repaint 126 residences and a clubhouse using an entirely new color palette as our existing colors were very outdated.

To ensure that that this ambitious project would conclude on time and on budget with sufficient buy-in, Barbara’s contribution was an important early strategic piece in the Board’s project plan to put color decision-making in an objective, professional context.

Pre-Sale color design: Exterior and Interior

Barbara selected the colors for my whole house, exterior and interior.

Neighbors would stop by to ask about the exterior as they admired it so much and wanted to copy it.

The interior was soothing and perfect for the 1912 Craftsman home.

Barbara’s work contributed to the rapid sale of my home. Outstanding cost effectiveness.

Residential - exterior consultation

Barbara was gracious, on point, full of suggestions and ideas. Went above and beyond and came through with a solution that really worked, tied everything in, and made it all pop. I do recommend her services and she’s great to work with.

Private residence - interior colors

Barbara did a very nice job – thoughtful, clear, and sound advice on the wall colors for our downstairs. She was prompt, responsive and happy to provide detailed follow through.

She demonstrated a wealth of knowledge about color and paint, and was a nice person to interact with. Barbara provided advice that matched our tastes, but also injected helpful ideas we hadn’t considered (unlike other designers I’ve worked who were either too wishy-washy or too pushy).

She provides a premium service with excellent color advice.

My wife and I are very happy with the results.

Residential - Interior and exterior

I was eager to write a little testimonial about working with Barbara Jacobs. It is a pleasure working with her. Knowing that the colors she selects will be right the first time saves time, money and late night paint chip angst.

If you’ve ever painted and repainted a wall because the color didn’t work, you will appreciate Barbara and her spot-on color skills.

I was so thrilled with her work on the exterior of my house, I hired her to help me select the finishes for my kitchen renovation.

Residential color for multiple homes

Hi, Barbara –
Thanks for inviting me to make a “client comment” for you. What I’ve been telling people about you is that you’re so different from my previous image of color consultants—which was that they’re opinionated, condescending, and elitist—interested in boosting their egos much more than in being helpful.

On the other hand, however, I found you to be funny, complimentary, friendly, and all around delightful, with an excellent eye for color and the ability to translate your skills to those not blessed with such perception.

From a Real Estate professional

Color is the creative staging necessary for any property, whether residential or commercial.

Thank you, Barbara, for all that wisdom.

Long-Distance Color

Dear Barbara,

I want to offer this testimonial for you!
We can not thank you enough for your excellent work in selecting the exterior paint colors for our home.

For the last two years, we have avoided painting the house due to the difficult task of picking the right colors and determining where to place the various colors.

The digital renderings are absolutely worth the investment.  We loved seeing what the house would look like before it was even painted.  Our painter has used the image as his own blueprint for painting the house.

It truly is a must-have service, and the end product looks practically just like the digital image!  It certainly put a complete end to the debate over colors that we have had as a couple!

I also cannot thank you enough for the ongoing support and recommendations you shared throughout the painting process, as we made some tweaks to address the nuances of a 130 year old Queen Anne Victorian home. There was so much detail as well as many additional structures (additions to the main house, carport, garage, and treehouse) to consider in the complete design.

We are the “talk of the town” (in the best possible way) thanks to your guidance on paint colors and placement.  I recommend this process and the experience of working with you to bring the project to life.  To quote my hubby who is very difficult to win over, “Well, I have to admit, hiring her was the right call.  I’m actually enjoying this process.”
DCP – Designer Color Palettes” long-distance  visualizing services are amazing!
P.S.  The boys LOVE the tree house paint colors.

Many Thanks,
—The White Family, Swarthmore, PA

Once upon a time, it was only all about the colors you "Love."

But stories evolve. And, in loving the spaces where you live and work, there’s a lot more than “love” to selecting the right colors that will create the optimium spaces.

“Supportive Color for the Built Environment” is my way of saying that there is science behind our color choices. Hue, Value, Chroma…Saturation, texture, environmental lighting, room sizes, and more…are some of the important elements we consider, and combine in myriad ways, in creating spaces that add to comfort, productivity, and more healthy environments overall.

All of these also distill into information that combine to create the ultimate best colors to apply in any built environment.

This is essentially what I consider when working with you. Collaboration. Your preferences.  And together, behind it all, we consider those elements—and more—along with the scientific qualities of colors. It’s about merging effectively with intuition, imagination, and experience.
